The colourful
logo and musical slogan for the 42nd TBA national Championships
- ‘THE HEAT IS ON – TENPIN IN THE TROPICS’ - featured in the
opening ceremony when the first of the premier interstate
Teams events of the National Championships began today.
The Walter de Veer Memorial tournament was attended by
dignitaries including the Federal Member for Herbert, Peter
Lindsay, State MP for Thuringowa, Anita Phillips and popular
Mayor of the City of Thuringowa, Les Tyrell.
The tournament is named in honour of the late Walter de
Veer AM, MBE, a Hall of Fame member of the sport’s national
governing body, Tenpin Bowling Australia. Established in
1996, the Tournament, recognises Walter de Veer’s long and
distinguished service to the sport of tenpin bowling.
The tournament is now firmly established as a popular event
contested over three consecutive days during the sport’s
Adult National Championships. It is designed to foster,
develop and advance a spirit of good sportsmanship and fellowship,
to promote and maintain a good relationship amongst the
representative teams and to provide an opportunity for a
combination of graded and handicapped competition.
The purpose of the Walter de Veer Memorial Tournament is
to determine annually the best State/Territory representative
team of bowlers with averages not exceeding 180 in the Men’s
Division and 170 in the Women’s Division in a handicapped
competition. Each team consists of seven players, with five
on the Lanes at any one time.
“Team events like the Walter de Veer event are the perfect
chance for spectators to see the skill, challenge and camaraderie
of tenpin bowling” said TBA CEO, Alex Popov as the event
got underway at Kirwan Tenpin Bowling Centre this morning.
