TOWNSVILLE’S THREE AMIGOS WIN INAUGURAL SENIORS INTERCENTRE CUP

The magnificent trophy provided by the City of Townsville for the inaugural CITY OF TOWNSVILLE SENIORS INTERCENTRE CUP was won by a local team in a hotly contested event at Currajong Super Bowl in Townsville yesterday.

The winning team comprised Ian Shaw, Shirley Hunter and Gloria Dawson. The three bowl together in a league each Monday at Currajong Bowl in Garbutt and their team was aptly named "The Three Amigos". They finished with 27.5 points, just half a point ahead of one of the Cairns Teams, the "CGP Hawks" with Townsville’s "Little Gems” a further point behind.

The bowling action continued yesterday afternoon at Currajong Bowl, with Ray Krueger from the ACT taking the honours in the Men's division of the Super Seniors (60+) after 13 games of matchplay, ahead of Doug Lenton from NSW and Don Ramsay from Queensland. In the Women's division, Dallas Archer from NSW finished in first place, with Renata Maglieri from the Northern Territory second and Coral Haworth (also formerly from the NT, but now living in Cairns, Qld) third.

The Seniors (50+) category has been a popular addition to the hectic bowling schedule of the sport’s National championships. The sport is renowned for its widespread appeal to people of all ages and levels of physical prowess and is recognised as having many benefits. Tenpin bowling is a low impact, gender-equal sport that can be played all year round and has seen a surge in participation levels by Australia’s enthusiastic seniors population.

Tenpin Bowling Australia sent a team to compete in last month’s Asian Seniors Championships in Guam and the outing was very successful. The four-person teams in both the Men’s and Women’s divisions won Bronze medals and Melbourne’s Rod Stewart overcame an injury sustained in the qualifying round to clinch the Masters Gold medal.

While the events for Seniors and Super-Seniors continued all weekend at Currajong Bowl, non-stop bowling action is also underway at Kirwan Bowling Centre as extra groups of bowlers arrive for the myriad of events scheduled in the coming fortnight.

Three new Records were established today at Kirwan Bowl. In Men's C Grade Teams, the 5-man team from Tasmania (Kevin Huxley, Barry Roussow, Garry Arnol, Ted Johnson and Garry Lee) broke the former record of 2341 with a 2367 series.

In the Mixed D Grade Teams, the 5 person team from Queensland (Tracy Thomson, Matthew Carrington, Fiona Horwood, Peter Saunders and Mick Wilkins) established a new benchmark (first Mixed Team in D Grade) with a 1681 series.

In the Mixed A Grade Teams, Victorian bowlers Sue Jones, John Goldsmith, Danny Gibson, Graeme O'Connor and Michael Griffith overtook the former 2665 high with a 2686 series.

Spectators are welcome to visit the host Centres throughout the Nationals – admission is free. However, for those unable to come to attend, full coverage of the action and full results can be found on TBA’s official website -www.tenpin.org.au.
